      Digital marketing (sometimes known as data-driven marketing) is a term for the marketing of products or services using digital technologies, mainly the Internet, but also including mobile phones, display advertising, and any other digital medium.

Digital marketing has gone through a lot of changes since the 1990s and the 2000s  and this has changed the way brands and businesses utilize technology for marketing.

Today the number of people who use their digital devices to shop instead of visiting physical shops as it used to be a couple of decades ago has increased.

This has proved that digital marketing campaigns are becoming more prevalent and efficient, this is evident enough with the most recent reports showing the number of people embracing digital marketing increasing every day.

These range from individuals, small, medium and large cooperations. It is evident enough for one to say that if any business is to grow so at fairly good speed, it has to involve in digital marketing in its marketing strategy or else it will miss out on various opportunities for increasing sales using digital technologies.

According to the 2018 Digital marketing stats report by Venture Harbour, mobile marketing seems to be all over the place as many people now have access to smart mobile phones and the internet usage has also increased hence creating opportunities for digital marketing users.

Mediums or Forms of Digital Marketing

The number of digital marketing mediums has increased of late and range from Broadcast (TV and radio), Search Engine Optimization i.e Internet, email and mobile devices, social media i.e facebook, twitter,LinkedIn .etc

Tv and radio

Tv and radio are among the oldest forms of digital marketing. With this form of digital marketing (Broadcast), One can produce and distribute commercials on various local TV and radio stations. Radio is the cheapest as compared to TV and it is effective for a company that operates locally.

TV, on the other hand, offers more visual stimulation and creativity, but it costs quite large sums of money just to produce and broadcast a small-market commercial.

The advantage of Television is that it has a wide reach, but audience inattentiveness and control through DVRs is limiting. Radio offers local reach and repetition, but no visual element.

Digital and Interactive

The Internet, email and mobile devices fill a new media category referred to as digital/interactive. This began with the invention of the three Ws (web) in the mid-1990s.

Banner ads, streaming audio and video and corporate websites are common web-based media messages. Email serves as a direct touch point with prospects and existing customers.

Companies often send regular newsletter updates. Mobile devices have opened the door for growth in mobile ad messaging.

This involves the practice of promoting one`s brand and content in form of articles, products, services on social media channels to increase brand awareness, drive traffic, and generate leads for your business.

Social media has evolved in the early 21st century with billions of active users all over the world. It offers a relatively low-cost way for your business to get more engagement with customers through paid and non-paid promotion forms.

You can send out messages to all followers via Twitter but also respond directly to individual comments and discussions. i.e Facebook allows for company announcements, question-and-answer posts and other ongoing interaction with customers.

This type of engagement is vital in a fast-paced, technology-driven marketplace.

Social media has changed the way companies market services and products on the internet and this has seen many organizations putting a very big portion of the advertising budget into social media marketing.

Search Engine Optimization

SEO is a way of increasing the quality and quantity of traffic or visitors to a website naturally -normally referred to as organic or unpaid traffic. In brief, it improves or increases the chances of your website appearing in the topmost search engine results in relation with the searchers’ keywords.

The higher the rank, the more the chances of the visitor converting into a lead. SEO looks at optimizing different forms of content on the internet including but not limited to Text, videos, images etc.

 Digital Content Marketing

This is another form of marketing that involves the creation and promotion of digital content on the internet with the goal of lead creation, brand awareness, lead conversions etc.

The forms of digital content may include ebooks, news articles, blog content, infographics, research whitepapers.

This form of marketing is usually used by news agencies, bloggers who in most cases earn through advertising and this is determined by the number of visitors they get on their platforms or websites.
